Major of the Master’s Degree in International Relations

The Luiss master’s degree program in International Relations, taught entirely in English, offers a global mindset and interdisciplinary studies in key subjects to jump start a career with international institutions, non-governmental and governmental organizations and private companies operating around the world.

Profound political and socioeconomic changes have led Luiss to design an all new master’s program in International Relations to train graduates to predict, monitor and govern events with global repercussions.

Program Insights

The program is entirely held in English

During the first year, all students follow the program’s core courses, focusing on history, law and economics with a comparative approach. During the second year, students then begin to concentrate on one of three majors, each leading to a specific career path: Diplomacy, Security or Mediterranean Governance.

Students from the three majors may choose elective courses to deepen their knowledge of themes covered in mandatory courses. They also have the opportunity to study a second language.

The major in Diplomacy is designed to train students for careers representing Italy around the world while also providing outstanding preparation for careers with international organizations. Students majoring in Diplomacy focus on the theory and history of international relations as well as European governance.

The major in Security focuses on current challenges facing the field on a global level. Graduates of the major become experts with a deep understanding of the dynamics of security, geopolitics and strategy in Europe and beyond. Students majoring in Security focus on policy related to security, the international fight against terrorism and European security legislation.

The major in Mediterranean Governance shapes experts in the Euro-Mediterranean area. Students focus on the sociology of Mediterranean countries as well as cultures, political systems and European migration policy.

Job Opportunities

The Luiss master’s program in International Relations prepares graduates for careers in diplomacy, as international security experts for both the public and private sectors and in the management of Euro-Mediterranean issues. The program furthermore responds to the growing need for highly trained figures within international organizations and the traditional diplomatic sector that are able to handle both old and new, emerging challenges.

One of the most pressing issues the course addresses is the current crisis of European institutions. In response, Luiss wants to shape a new generation of experts, ready to adapt the spirit of the original treaties to current needs and relaunch regional cooperation within the EU as well as with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern countries.

The course also prepares students for careers addressing the migration crises, new geopolitical balances and the effects of new markets opening in Asia and Africa.

Graduates of the program may begin careers with international and European organizations, as specialists in international and European politics, international affairs reporters, journalists, private consultants or consultants to the armed forces.
